MINUTES OF THE ARLINGTON CEMETERY COMMISSON
September 11, 2008

Present: Commissioners Bernie Smith, Michele Hassler, Howard Winkler of the Arlington Historical Society, Jim Dodge, Operations Mgr. of DPW and Acting Cemetery Supervisor, Jason Jones.                                   
The meeting began at 9:10 a.m.

  • Seven deeds were signed.
  • Minutes from August were approved.
  • The fence replacement bid will be going out soon, $90,000 will be spent over 2 years for the 5-foot, chain link fence to surround the Old Section.
  • Memorial bench program was discussed.  Interested parties would buy a bench recommended by the Cemetery Commissioners.
  • Jim Dodge stated that the vacant truck driver position could be filled by Oct. 1.
  • The Commissioners were told the leaves are taken off-site by ELDCO.  Old Burying Ground will continue to be done by Town employees.
  • Discussed Garden St. expansion and was told that the AC field is off limits.
  • Cooke’s Hollow:  should we sell pre-need?
  • Per Town Counsel, Juliana Rice, the Powers family left $150,000 to the Cemetery for an expansion project.
  • Jim Dodge left at 9:40am and returned at 10:20am
  • Prince Hall; no more burials per the Commissioners and mowing has been done.
  • Dallin buyback – flat marker only, U –field also.
  • W-field; no urn graves should be sold on hill because of possible Chapel renovation.
  • Dave Berry, Planning Dept. and JoAnn Robinson of the Arlington Historical Commission joined the meeting at 10:00am.
  • Ivan Myjer, Building and Monument Conservation joined the meeting at 10:05am.

  • Conditions Assessment Report was discussed of the Old Burying Ground.  The summary with database will be formatted and shared for public use.  Stone by stone assessment was done and a new map of the OBG was produced.  Headstones are in restoring and repair; tombs need a lot of work as the walls are bowing.  Funding is needed and a meeting will take place to discuss where monies might come from.  No more burials will be approved for the OBG with the last known burial being the Smith Family, Sept. 18, 1976.  Historical guidelines are in summary and approval by Historical Commission is needed.  Capital funds request need to be submitted by Sept. 19, 2008.  Meeting will take place to discuss next step and funding.

Next meeting will be October 9, 2008.
