Report Ranks Arlington Lowest in Overall Crime
The Massachusetts Major City Chiefs (MMCC) presented a follow up to their first crime report.  The report compiled crime data from 25 Massachusetts Major Cities (MMCs) with populations over 40,000, including Arlington. The data presented represents a comparative analysis of calendar years 2006 and 2007 in their completion. The first report, released late 2007, looked at the first six months of those years.

According to the report, Arlington again ranked lowest in Overall Crime in 2007 with a 1% decrease from 2006.

“These results illustrate the dedication and skill of our Police force to make Arlington even safer” said Town Manager Brian Sullivan. “This is one ranking I like to see Arlington come in last.”

Arlington ranked lowest in the categories of Violent Crime and Rape with decreases of 10% and 38% respectively. Motor Vehicle Thefts (39) and Murders (1) saw no change. However, increases were seen in Assaults (4%) and Burglaries (11%).

“We are monitoring these results closely” said Arlington Chief of Police Frederick Ryan. “Analysis like this helps us identify trends that will help inform our deployment strategies to better protect Arlington."

The report was compiled in cooperation with the MMCC, the Police Executive Research Forum, and the Massachusetts Association of Crime Analysts. It can be viewed here.
